Narrows bridge: Dammeier understands unfair tolls (TNT Letters)

"The state Legislature authorized $4.65 billion, including $1.6 billion from the latest gas tax increase, to construct the State Route 520 bridge across Lake Washington. Officials proudly state that $1.2 billion in toll revenue will be generated to help pay project costs. But that is only 26.32 percent of total costs.

Tacoma Narrows Bridge users have been strapped with 100 percent cost payback through tolls by the worst bond package ever sold by the state of Washington. How much of the recent gas tax increase (that we also pay) was dedicated to the Narrows Bridge? Zero.

Sen. Bruce Dammeier is one of the few in Olympia that understand the impact tolls have on our economy as well as the unfair impact on hard working people of Pierce County. That’s why I’m supporting Dammeier as our next Pierce County executive."
